Problems with buying Mac friendly external hard drives and 9131 errors

Folk have been having some problems when buying Mac friendly pre-formatted drives like a Seagate FreeAgent Desk for Mac as it comes pre-formatted with GUID partition map. I you have an Intel Mac then that will NOT cause you a problem. However if you have a PPC or you are going to end up at a facility that still has Power PC Macs you will need to reformat it to the Apple Partition Map before it will play with Pro Tools nicely.

This little problem slipped in with the introduction of Intel Macs and Mac OS 10.4.6 when GUID Partition Table support was introduced. The default mode when formatting drives now on Intel Macs is GUID Partition Table. If you put this drive onto a Power PC Mac like a G4 or G5 then you are likely to get 9131 errors in Pro Tools.  You can check if your drive is partitioned with a GUID Partition Table using Disk Utility.

If you select the higher level icon in the drive list in Disk Utility, in the bottom section it will show what partition map has been used.

Any drive formatted on an Intel Mac will use a GUID Partition Table. You will need to use the Options menu in the Partition tab to force Disk Utility to select Apple Partition Map.

Alternatively just format the drive on a Power PC Mac and it will be formatted with an Apple Partition Map.

If you have an incorrectly formatted drive you will need to move all the material off it to reformat it with the correct partition map. So if you do buy a pre-formatted Mac friendly drive then check it with Disk Utility first and pre-format it BEFORE you put anything on it.

It is in the Pro Tools documentation but it has caught me out!

Does Pro Tools work with X San?

There has been a thread on the DUC on whether Apple’s Xsan will work with Pro Tools.

A user’s employer has purchased an Xsan having been assured it would work with Pro Tools but found….

The Xsan drive is recognized by OS X (Leopard) and ProTools (7.4.2) but we are unable to change the volume type of the drive from “Transfer” to “Record” in workspace. (When tried, we receive the error “”LA_Post” cannot be designated as an Audio volume because it is not a fixed, removable or MediaNet volume” (The volume is named “LA_Post”.)

The replied all confirming that Pro Tools won’t work with Xsan ever. For example…

Sadly Xsan can not be used as a audio drive (for record or playback) by Pro Tools and whoever sold it to you should know that; Digidesign have been telling people that it can’t since Apple released it.

Like someone else said its to do with the way PT accesses the file system. Pro Tools doesn’t work with software based raid systems which is really what Xsan is. There are ways to fool Pro Tools to work with it but having tried it I would not recommend them. That said you can play video off a Xsan in PT which speeds thing up a great deal and depending on the speed of your fibre channel connection copying sessions to and from is very, very fast.

The iscsi route can use the Xsan storage, but be sure to test before buying.

and…

Pro Tools has it’s own way of handling File level Sharing or Block Level Sharing
You actually need a third party software in order to utilize the Xsan and for the storage pool to work with PT(read & write) via iSCSI:

The recommendation is to go down the iSCSI route and try either Fibrejet or Fibreshare or to go for complete solutions from Ardistech or Studio Network Solutions.

If anyone has any experiences with centralised storage with Pro Tools then please post your comments here.

Trying to use Network attached raids for both Macs and PCs with Pro Tools

In this thread on the DUC someone wants to be able to share Raid arrays with both Macs and PCs and the basic outcome is that resolving formatting issues (Mac OS Extended with MacDrive or NTFS and the new MacFUSE software won’t be enough. What is needed is SAN software management software, and that Apple’s Xsan doesn’t work with Pro Tools what is needed is SNS SANmp or Fibrejet for Pro Tools compatible solutions.
