We undertook the audio post production for 186 Media for this video resource for of one the Open Unversity’s Arts courses. The performance sequences were recorded ‘multitrack and close miced. We then remixed it and set the performance in an appropriate acoustic.
An Open University commission to unlock some of the secrets of string quartets looked at the history of their composition and performance.
186 Media worked with exceptional musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, using various rehearsal and performance spaces within the college to highlight parts of the process of preparing and playing a string quartet. Featured musicians were the Myrios, Heath and Diamond Quartets, and in particular the Navarra Quartet.
Working with academic and musician Fiona Richards, the commission was to produce a unit for a general arts introduction course, exploring the themes of tradition and dissent.
Aside from some fascinating insights into the dynamics of string quartets, the DVD includes detailed exposition of a Beethoven quartet, and culminates in a remarkable performance of a Shostakovich Quartet by the young award-winning Navarra Quartet, made up of distinguished postgraduates from the RNCM.

Seven radio producers – all based in the north of England – have joined forces to launch a new co-operative venture – ‘Radio Wizards’. It’s equally remarkable that their aim now is to work together on every kind of sound production... except radio!
"It’s taken over a year to get to this point," says ‘wizard’ Mike Thornton, "but now we’ve got a viable business plan, we’ve launched our website and we’re already starting to attract commissions. As a facilities provider we decided to facilitate this partnership and set them up with a web site to help kickstart this excellent partnership."
