Removable Firewire Solutions
We used to recommend the Storcase DS321. This chassis is perfect for editing audio and/or video, or for any FireWire based application requiring removable drives.
The DS321 chassis was designed for use either as a desktop or 1U 19" rack mount. Each DS321 contains two StorCase Data Express DE110 carriers and shipped with external cables for either FW800-to-FW800 or FW800-to-FW400 connections.
However CRU-Dataport bought the rights to manufacture and sell the entire Storcase range in 2006 and CRU-Dataport have discontinued the DS321. If you have one of these cases you can still get the DE110 drive carriers from CRU-Dataport.

Fixed Firewire Drives
These come in 2 basic types
Buss powered & self powered.
Very Important
It is crucial when using firewire drives with Pro tools that you must use drives with an Oxford Semiconductor bridge chipset.
Buss powered
are ideal for portable applications as they get their power from the host computer. They are based on 2.5” laptop drives which don't perform as well as other drives so you won't get as good track count and edit density but for portable aquistion and compact portable storage for simple projects they are ideal.
We like the Mac Power cases into which we put Seagate drives with a 5 year warranty. Prices vary by the day so please contact us for a quote.
Self powered firewire drives.
These have become a very cost effective form of storage with sizes from 40 - 180 gigs. They can perform nearly as well as scsi drives and are ideal for all but the most demanding applications.
We like the Mac Power cases into which we put Seagate drives with a 5 year warranty. Prices vary by the day so please contact us for a quote.

Bare drives
These are the best solution for demanding sessions with very high track counts and very high edit densitys. Also they are the only solution for older computers which don't support firewire. Our favourite ones are from Seagate and for current prices see our ProRates page.

CD/DVD-R Drives
For archiving and longer term storage 'burning onto CDRs or DVD-Rs is a very cost effective solution. We like to use Mac Power cases and put in Pioneer drives.
