More interesting comments on Wave Rider on the DUC

Ian Palmer who works in post asked some interesting questions, on the Wave Rider thread that is into its fourth page now, and Vedat, who designed Wave Rider replied…

I thought the little changes you would make would be easy on a second pass, rather than worrying about the overall levels. In other words, WR would get you close to where you want to be for your second pass.

It didn’t improve when I added a compresser onto the same track. It’s like the dialogue needs to be compressed, THEN fed through Wave Rider. This would, in my view, make it redunant as I do not like to destructively change the original audio when mixing.

Do you mean it DID improve? That would be my suggestion to use ever so slight compression before WR, if there wasn’t any applied during recording. You are a brave and a very patient man if you’re not using any compression and/or limiting during mixing. (or did I misunderstand?)

I wonder if the Wave’s version would perhaps be more suitable in this case as you can change how much the controlling fader moves.

Well, the Waves “version”, does not write the automation to the PT volume pane, it writes it to its internal pane, therefore their claims of it being un-colored etc are worthless, cause it’s still going through their signal path, adding delays etc. They took my concept but couldn’t apply the idea of being plugin-free after the first pass for obvious reasons.
With Wave Rider, you’re one bypass click away from handling the fader yourself on your controller.
